Adult Children with Elderly Parents:
The increasing frailty of a parent can be a daily reminder of that parent’s mortality, and by default, thrust the child into the role of caregiver. Making this change is often times an emotionally laden transition; and while caring for an elderly parent has great reward, it also carries great burden. It is important for the adult child to learn how to maintain a healthy balance in their new role of caregiver while continuing to deal with their own emotions and self care. Therapy provides a place for the adult child to express their feelings in order to successfully navigate this new relationship. It is helpful with reducing stress, de-cluttering the mind to encourage better decision making, improving communication, encouraging healthy self care and restoring balance.
